Create your own sourdough starter Christmas ornament for family and friends! This DIY ornament is a great way to share sourdough starter with others, and comes with rehydrating directions so they can start making their own sourdough bread in no time!

Christmas time holds a lot of great memories. Many of mine come with gathering with family and enjoying wonderful food made by all!

What is a sourdough starter Christmas ornament?

A sourdough starter Christmas ornament is a small mason jar with dehydrated sourdough starter in it.

Then, to make it hang like an ornament, you simply tie piece of string onto the mason jar’s lid.

Before presenting it, simply put on any tree bough to showcase!

Easy to make – This ornament project is a simple Christmas gift to make and then take to any holiday celebration!

Prepare in advance – Planning ahead for Christmas gifts? Since dehydrated sourdough starter is shelf stable, you can make this ornament well ahead of the Christmas time and have it all set to give.

Inexpensive – All you need is a few supplies to make several of these ornaments. No need to go over your budget with this gift!

The gift that keeps giving – Included with the dehydrated sourdough starter is how to make it active starter again for making sourdough bread or any treat for others! Sourdough starter truly is the gift that keeps giving.

What do you need to make a sourdough starter ornament?

To make this DIY sourdough starter ornament, you will need:

  • Dehydrated Sourdough Starter (or if making your own, check out this tutorial)
  • 4 oz. Mason Jar
  • Kitchen Scale
  • Fabric (cut into 4″ pieces)
  • Yarn/String (cut into 8″ pieces)
  • Labels
  • Permanent Marker
  • Scissors
  • Elastic Bands

How do you make a sourdough starter ornament?

Place the mason jar on the kitchen scale and zero out the weight.

Then, measure out 10 grams of dehydrated sourdough starter in the jar.

Label the jar with the contents.

Tie the 8″ piece of yarn onto the mason jar ring.

Tie another knot at the end of the string.

Place the lid on the mason jar with string in the position you’ll want it to hand onto tree from.

Center the fabric square on lid and secure with two rubber bands.

Cut a slit in the fabric where the string will hang on the tree.

This will prevent that fabric edge from being pushed up by string.

Cut any other parts of the fabric for desired look.

Print out “How to Rehydrate Your Sourdough PDF“, and cut it out.

Fold into quarters to create a booklet.
