Learn about our favorite winter chore clothes that will keep you warm despite the cold weather outside. These chore clothes stand the test of time, so once you have them in your wardrobe, they will be a warm companion for many winters to come!

My husband and I live and farm in Wisconsin. We both grew up working outside to complete our chores year round, and recognize the importance of warm clothes when we are outside in winter time!

Now as a farmwife, there are certain brands of clothing that have become my go to in order to keep us warm. My husband especially works outside in the cold long hours to keep machinery running smoothly for the next time we need it.

The brands we have come to love not only stand keep him warm, but also stand the test of wear and tear throughout the winter months.

Base Layers

Before heading out into the cold, we like to have some warm base layers help keep out the cold. We always grab some thermal knit shirts and underpants to put on underneath.

We are not too picky on base layers, as long as they are thick and warm.

For base layers, I always prefer something that doesn’t create too much bulk to my clothing.

Some brands that usually make their way into our closet, however, are Work n’ Sport thermals (shirts and long underwear) from a local retailer or Carhartt.

My husband is fine with his long underwear layer being bulkier, and he often times will just wear flannel pants in place of long underwear.

Overalls & Coat

When it comes to dressing for cold weather, our favorite brand is Carhartt and Berne for overalls and a good coat.

In the cold winter months, having insulated overalls on is a must! Our Carhartt overalls keep us warm and stand up to repeated wear.

Since they make men’s and women’s coats, Glen’s favorite Carhartt coat is this one. Here is my favorite Carhartt coat.

Another brand of coat we love is Berne. Our kids have a couple of Berne coats and it keeps them toasty warm!

Do we have other brands of coats? Yes!

We always get a couple other brands of coast from garage sales or family. Glen and I use them when our Carhartt one gets too dirty or wet.

We just prefer Carhartt because it lasts the longest with all the wear and tear Glen gives coats.

Socks

Thick socks that keep your feet warm are a big priority in winter!

Farming in the cold may bring stepping into frozen water or manure, walking the fence line, or other things. Keeping your feet as toasty as possible is important.

Before slipping on our boots, we like put on a wool blend sock like ones from Dickies or Hanes. There’s also a few pairs of Smartwool socks in our drawers too.

There are thick, heavy socks out there are not a wool blend, but we find that the ones with wool end up being the longest lasting and warmest socks.

Boots

There are many people out there who love Muck boots, or a boot that is very similar.

Whether it looks like a chore boot or a insulated hunting boot, insulated boots are a must!

While I have enjoyed Muck boots, my husband’s favorite, is more of a classic insulated boot from the brand Rocky.

Yes, it does look more like a hunting boot, but he is very hard on boots and these last!

Do you notice a theme so far?

We don’t hesitate to get durable, quality products that will last us through not just one, but many winters to come!

That is my advice to you – don’t skimp!

I also know I need to get him two pairs of boots right away.

Why?

He’s outside so much that one pair might be drying our on boot rack, and the others are on his feet.

Hat, Mittens & Gloves

We enjoy Wells Lamont gloves or mittens the most in the winter.

I also make homemade mittens when I have a chance out of recycled sweaters. These are incredibly warm and durable!

As for hats, if we don’t have any knit hat usually works well for us in keeping us warm. If we are talking about durability and long lasting though, we recommend Carhartt hats.

Carhartt hats (and the brand) seems to have evolved into more of a fashion statement at times, but please don’t mistake me – I’m not trying to sell you on fashion!

I am selling you on trying to stay warm!

Carhartt is simply a great brand when it comes to durable, and long lasting items for winter.

Other brands?

There are many different brands we prefer to source our winter gear from. Most prominently is Carhartt, Berne and Rocky boot company to outfit us.

In all of our gear though, my best advice is to get quality products!

They will last you the entire winter (or two or three…), and won’t leave you cold and miserable with still two hours of chores to do (yes, we have been there!)

What are your favorites?

If you live with long, cold winters, I would love to hear your favorite things!

Any other tried-and-true brands or items I missed that we should add to our list?

We would love to give them a try! Please let me know of great products in the comments!
