Need a refreshing drink during the summertime? Homemade Strawberry Limeade is not only refreshing, but also hydrating! This recipe is easily made in 5 minutes and can be served as is, or in addition to Sprite soda similar to Sonic’s recipe to give it some fizz for any occasion!

I am all about summery drinks! Iced coffee, iced tea or lemonade, and limeade!

I used to work at an A&W in high school, and strawberry limeade was the “new” thing. It was around the time that Sonic’s strawberry limeades were so popular as well.

People would order it quite a bit, because it was so refreshing!

While I love the flavor of strawberry limeades, I wanted to make a homemade version for my family that was hydrating and satisfying during the summer heat without having to add Sprite all the time.

As a result, this recipe can be served on it’s own or Sprite can be added when desired. It’s a win, win recipe!

Why Limeades?

You will love limeades because:

  • Easy to make!
  • Numerous flavor possibilities – strawberry (like this recipe), cherry, raspberry or other fruit flavors.
  • Limeades pair well with soda or sparkling water to make a fancier drink!

What goes into a Strawberry Limeade?

For this recipe, you will need:

  • Lime juice (bottled or juice from fresh limes)
  • Strawberries
  • Sugar
  • Salt (We prefer sea salt, but Redmond’s Real Salt is a close second)
  • Lemon lime soda, optional (I prefer Sprite)
A small cutting board with limes on the left side, sugar in the middle, and strawberries on the right side.

What you will need

  • A two quart pitcher or mason jar
  • Mixing spoon
  • Dry & Liquid Measuring Cups

How to make Strawberry Limeade

Assemble your ingredients.

An empty mason jar next to a measuring cup with sugar in it, and a liquid measuring cup with lime juice in it for homemade strawberry limeade.

Before making the limeade, mix 1 Tablespoon of sugar into your sliced strawberries. Set them aside. The sugar will release the juice from the strawberries and give more strawberry flavor to your limeade.

Then, combine the lime juice, sugar, salt and warm water in a two quart pitcher or mason jar.

Mix to dissolve sugar and salt.

Add the strawberries and stir to infuse them into the limeade.

Stir in the 5 – 6 cups of cold water.

Serve right away, or refrigerate the limeade until ready to serve. (The longer you let the strawberries sit in the limeade, the more strawberry flavor you will have in the limeade).

If desiring to serve strawberry limeades with Sprite or another lemon lime soda, pour about two third – three quarters of the glass full with strawberry limeade and then add your soda to finish filling it.

For larger amounts, follow about the same amount of limeade vs. soda.

Prep Time 5 minutes mins
Servings 8 cups

Equipment

  • 1 2 quart pitcher or mason jar
  • 1 liquid measuring cup
  • 1 1/3 cup

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup lime juice
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 5 – 6 cups cold water
  • 5 – 6 fresh strawberries, hulled
  • Sprite or lemon lime soda (optional)

Instructions

  • Combine the lime juice, sugar, salt and warm water in a two quart pitcher or mason jar.
  • Mix to dissolve sugar and salt.
  • Add the strawberries and stir to infuse them into the limeade.
  • Stir in the 5 – 6 cups of cold water.
  • Serve right away, or refrigerate the limeade until ready to serve. (The longer you let the strawberries sit in the limeade, the more strawberry flavor you will have in the limeade).

Notes

  1. To sweeten with honey instead of sugar, simple replace the amount of sugar in the recipe for honey instead.
  2. To make the limeade colder faster (if serving right away), place frozen strawberries in the limeade in addition or as a replacement for fresh strawberries.

Why is salt in homemade strawberry limeades?

For our family’s strawberry limeades, I always like to add a pinch of salt to give it a little more flavor AND for hydration.

Since I am mainly making our homemade strawberry limeades during the summertime, I also add salt because is very important for your body in staying hydrated because it contains essential minerals for your body.

Is Sprite or 7 Up better for Strawberry Limeades?

Sprite is my personal favorite for strawberry limeades!

You can add 7 Up or another lemon lime soda for limeades (and we certainly have!), but my family and I prefer the taste of Sprite versus other brands.

It all comes down to preference for me!

What are other popular flavors of limeades?

There are lots of possible flavors!

Our other favorite flavors of limeade include:

  • Cherry – To make this, simply add 1/4 – 1/3 cup tart cherry juice to your limeade.
  • Raspberry – Instead of the strawberries, add 1/2 – 1 cup of crushed red raspberries to your limeade. (Crushed berries will release their juice better and give you a better raspberry flavor to your limeade).

What’s your favorite flavor? I’d love to hear about it in the comments!
