What you will need
How to make homemade lemonade step by step
Making homemade lemonade is so simple!
- Combine your sweetener (I am using sugar for this recipe, but you can also use honey or another one of your choice) with your lemon juice, pinch or salt and a cup of warm water.
- Mix to combine all the ingredients, and dissolve the sugar and salt.
- Add 5 – 6 more cups of cold water to make a two quart pitcher of lemonade, and mix.
- Serve with ice cubes and/or add frozen blueberries for a blueberry infused flavor.
Is homemade lemonade better than store bought?
Yes! Homemade lemonade tastes amazing compared to store lemonade. I usually always buy some Country Time mix in the summer so my husband can make some on the go when he’s working in the fields, but he will say homemade is the best!
For our household, we prefer ours just slightly sweeter than having equal parts of lemon juice with sugar. If you like yours on the tart side and not so sweet, you can reduce the amount of sweetener.
Nutritionally, you control the ingredients that go in your lemonade, which makes it better FOR you as well!
While lemon juice already has many benefits for you, in making your own lemonade you can also change sweeteners. If you prefer natural sweeteners like honey, you add even more benefits to your lemonade.

Why is salt in homemade lemonade?
For our family’s lemonade, I always like to add a pinch of salt to give it a little more flavor.
Since I am mainly making lemonade during the summertime, I also add salt because is very important for your body in staying hydrated because it contains essential minerals for your body.
Is homemade lemonade cheaper?
Yes! Lemonade mix can vary depending on the kind that you buy and where. For me, buying a Country Time Lemonade 19 oz container is the same price as a 32 oz. bottle of lemon juice, which is around $4.00.
For the lemon juice, a 32 oz bottle will give me just over 7 two quart pitchers of lemonade. (This would come out to 57 cents per two quart pitcher, or 8 cups of lemonade))
For the premade mix, I get just under 3 two quart pitcher of lemonade. (This would come out to 1.33 per two quart pitcher)
For the sweetener, I usually use organic sugar in our household, which is generally a little pricier than others. For this recipe, I can make a two-quart pitcher of lemonade at 50 cents.
For salt, I usually use sea salt would be just a couple pennies added on to that.
The results:
Lemonade mix (with everything ready for instant lemonade) = $1.33
Homemade lemonade (lemon juice, sugar, salt) = $1.09
Your homemade lemonade may be a little cheaper depending on the ingredients, but I used mine to illustrate that even with quality ingredients you are coming out ahead!
Can you use fresh fruit in homemade lemonade?
Yes, you can! It might take a little longer for the to infuse/develop a taste of that fruit, but I’ve made it with fresh and frozen fruit.
If making with fresh fruit, I would suggest making it ahead of time to have ready later on in the day or for the next day. You will get the most fruit flavor that way.
The reason I enjoy using frozen fruit like blueberries in our lemonade is they act as ice cubes at first, and as they thaw they more easily release their juice into the lemonade.
Other fruit you can use in homemade lemonade
I love to use frozen strawberries and raspberries for our family the most, but you can use any frozen fruit you wish!
All you do for adding different frozen fruit is simply follow the recipe for making our homemade lemonade, and use the same amount of fruit that it calls for.

If you try this recipe and love it, I would love it if you gave it 5 stars! Thank you!
