Make this simple, naturally sweetened cooked Homemade Egg Nog recipe for the holidays or anytime of year! Creamy and with notes of vanilla and spices, this non-alcoholic Homemade Egg Nog takes less five minutes to make, and can be served cold or warm.

Two glasses of egg nog topped with whipped cream and a mason jar of more egg nog in the background.

Whenever the weather starts getting colder, I pull out all the recipes for warm drinks. Yes – even though egg nog is commonly found in the stores as a chilled drink, I also love drinking it warm!

In fact, with my third pregnancy while trying to avoid caffeine, I found it an excellent replacement instead of coffee AND got extra protein in my diet!

Is homemade egg nog worth it?

Yes, it is! Both financially and also for the health benefits!

I usually have all the ingredients in my home for making egg nog. By making my own, I avoid having to pay extra for something I can easily make in my home.

For health benefits, I usually try to avoid any extra ingredients that don’t need to be in foods.

Store bought egg nog has a few more ingredients for flavor and thickeners (like gums) that I avoid when making egg nog homemade.

Is it okay to drink homemade egg nog?

Yes, it is!

No raw eggs in this egg nog!

For this recipe, I blend all the egg nog ingredients and heat it over medium low heat until thoroughly heated. By doing this, the eggs in the egg nog are gently cooked through.

Doing so this way also allows me to drink warm egg nog, OR allows me to make ahead of time for an event and chill until serving without concern.

Supplies for homemade egg nog

For this recipe you will need:

  • Blender (we love our Ninja!) or an Immersion Blender
  • Saucepan
  • Whisk (this can be used instead if you don’t have a blender…it just takes a bit longer).
  • Two quart glass jar or pitcher

Ingredients

  • Eggs
  • Whole Milk
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Vanilla
  • Salt (We prefer sea salt, but this is our Redmond’s Real Salt is a second favorite)

How do you make homemade cooked egg nog?

Gather all your ingredients.

Ingredients for homemade egg nog including a measuring cup of milk, measuring cup with maple syrup, two eggs and two teaspoons of spices next to them.

Measure out the milk and the spices.

If using a blender….Place all the ingredients in the blender.

Blend until smooth before adding to the saucepan.

If using an immersion blender…Place all the ingredients into the saucepan, and blend with the immersion blender.

If you don’t have either blender, simply use your whisk to blend the eggs into the milk and other ingredients thoroughly.

With the saucepan on the stovetop, turn the burner on medium to medium low.

Whisk occasionally until raw egg nog mixture is heated through, and warm.

To serve warm – Simply pour in mugs and serve with whipped cream, if desired.

To serve chilled – Pour warm egg nog mixture into a two quart glass jar or pitcher, and place in the refrigerator. Chill for at least two hours, before serving.

In addition, top with whipped cream if desired!
