Create a simple and beautiful wildflower door decoration in minutes! Wildflowers are so beautiful when in season, and one way to enjoy them is by creating a hanging decoration for your front door.

I absolutely love wildflowers! They come in so many colors and are free for me to gather along the roadsides by our farm when I talk a walk with my kids.
And of course, my children are willing helpers to gather them as well!
While putting them in a vase works for that day, many wildflowers often don’t seem to do well inside once they are picked. To preserve and enjoy them for longer, I started gathering them and hanging them upside down around our house.
How do you create a flower hanging?
I do it very simply by gathering up my wildflowers that I picked and organizing them.
I put the shorter flowers in front and the longer or fuller flowers in the back. I tie the ends together with twine and create a loop in the twine for them to hang by.
Then, I place the flowers where I want them in my home.

What are good front door decorations other than wreaths?
Flower hangings are a great door decoration instead of wreaths!
Until I started doing wildflower hangings on my front door, I felt like I did not have very much decoration besides my Christmas wreath during the winter season.
Now, I can have a variety of door decorations throughout the growing season. All I need to do is gather flowers, tie them together, and hang them from my front door.
It’s easy and I can change it out whenever I want with no cost!

Wildflowers to use
I choose a variety of wildflowers for my door decorations. Many times I go by what is currently available and growing.
In the pictures for this post, I was gathering wildflowers during late summer.
These are the kinds I had available to me at the time:
- White or purple asters
- Ironweed (a kind of aster)
- Queen Anne’s Lace
- Goldenrod
- Western Sunflower
- Spotted Knapweed

Can you do this with other flowers?
Yes, you can do this with other flowers as well!
I’ll often add in some flowers of my own garden as they are growing to add more color and variety. Sometimes I’ll even use flowers from flower shops – this DIY is very versatile!
If you don’t have wildflowers close to you, but want to use them, you can buy dried ones to arrange for this DIY door decoration.
Supplies you will need
- Wildflowers (picked yourself, or you can buy dried bunches of wildflowers to your preference)
- Twine (I like the aesthetic it gives, but regular string works as well)
- Command hook (or another hanger for your door)
Step by Step Instructions
First, lay out your flowers by order of size and color. You will do the hanging in three layers, so it is important to have them separated.

For the back of your hanging door decoration, choose the wildflowers that are the longest and fullest. Trim any stems or leaves as necessary throughout this process, as desired.

(I used goldenrod and western sunflowers).
In the middle layer, I choose wildflowers that spray out more. These help give it your hanging a delicate, but fuller look.

(I used asters/ironweed)
Lastly, for the top wildflower layer, choose flowers that are more delicate, closer together, and/or have shorter stems.

(I used queen anne’s lace, and spotted knapweed)
Once the arrangement of the wildflowers is finished, tie the stems together with your twine or string.
Create a loop for your wildflower bouquet to hang from your front door.

Add a twine bow to the front, like I did, if you wish as well.

When you are done, hang on your front door!
It is as easy as that!

What flowers do you like?
I’m always looking for other flowers that would look great in my flower door decorations.
Please let me know in the comments what kind I should add!
